30 million damage - batteries in the residual waste become incendiary bombs in waste plants
Alert for batteries in residual waste: Disposers complain about more and more fires in recycling plants with millions of damages. The team of Prof. Pomberger, especially Thomas Nigl, locates existential pressure on the industry and demands a deposit system. The following exciting article has been published in the Kleine Zeitung adressing this issue. LINK

Nomination for the State Prize 2018 for Environment and Energy Technology
We congratulate our colleagues and members of the working group "Future Waste" for the nomination for the State Prize for Environment and Energy Technology in the category Environment, Climate and Energy! The process for the recycling of lithium-ion batteries, which was developed through many years of research, was submitted. The aim was the development of a (secondary) resource oriented, economically and ecologically reasonable, holistic recycling process for LIB which finally was implemented in 2018 in a industrially upscaled LIB-recycling plant in Bremerhaven by our project partners Redux GmbH and Saubermacher Dienstleistungs AG. This great waste management idea prevailed against 124 competitors and was honored in a splendid setting at the State Prize Gala in Graz. Congratulations! LINK

"Stars of Styria" at Montanuniversität Leoben
On October 10, 2018, the best apprentices and their training companies were honored in a very solemn ceremony at WIFI Niklasdorf at the "Stars of Styria" award ceremony organized by the Chamber of Commerce.  With this award, the Chamber of Commerce wishes to set an example of appreciation for people who invest heavily in vocational education and training and also for companies that make this possible as training organisations. This time a total of 28 apprentices and 16 training companies were awarded the trophy "Stars of Styria". For the first time also apprenticeship graduates of the Montanuniversität Leoben were among the winners.  Ms. Sophie Tatschl completed her training as a chemical laboratory technician at the Department of Waste Processing Technology and Waste Management and completed the final apprenticeship exam last February with excellent results. We congratulate Ms. Tatschl on her performance and look forward to receiving this award as a training company! Here two pictures.

Ö1 radio report with Prof. Pomberger - Topic: Fire risk of waste batteries
They can be found in mobile phones, notebooks and power tools - rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. For the waste management industry, a new problem arises with the increase of those batteries, that get disposed of as household waste, instead of hazardous waste. Unlike electronic scrap, they bear a not negligible risk of fire in them. Here, is the link to the German radio report of Prof. Pomberger discussing this topic (time 12:42).

Batteries in plastic packaging waste – Impressions of a sorting analysis
In the BAT-SAFE project, the AVAW and project partners such as Saubermacher are investigating the effects and potential risks of batteries in waste management systems.
With full dedication, members of AVAW examine waste streams in sorting analyses, such as the plastic packaging collection.
Again and again, they also find batteries and batteries that can be easily damaged during collection and subsequent treatment and then pose a major fire hazard - photos here
Looking for more information on that topic? Sign up for the Recy & Depo Tech 2018, our conference on the topics waste management and recycling!

Job advertisement - Chair AVAW
We are looking for a new colleague. Here you find the job advertisment for the position as a full employed scientific staff at our chair (Deadline 26th of September 2018 - reference number 1808WPA).

Batteries in residual waste and plastic packaging waste – a red-hot topic
Recently, there are more and more events of fire in waste management plants that are ignited by (portable) batteries. It is noticeable that waste streams, such as residual waste or lightweight packaging, are increasingly affected, although batteries should not be disposed of via these fractions.
The correct way to dispose of portable batteries is, on the one hand, the collection of portable batteries via the collection boxes of retailers and, on the other hand, the battery collection in waste collection centers (see picture here, Source: http://avaw.unileoben.ac.at/media/Nigl_et_al_2018_Poster4_PartnertagLE_final.pdf).

Wet wipes – The new challenge for the sewer industry
The study carried out by us at the chair on the subject of "wet wipes" and their effects due to incorrect disposal in the sewage system on behalf of the Styrian Sewage Treatment Agency (GSA) is causing a great stir. Mistakes paralyze pumps, causing millions of dollars worth of damage to be paid by the taxpayer. The goal now is to raise awareness of the problem in the population. Decisive for the harmful effect is the proportion of synthetic fibers in the product. Decisive for the harmful effect is the proportion of synthetic fibers in the product. Therefore, pay attention to the natural fiber content, or make a tear test. If the cloth breaks easily, it is a product that can be safely used.

The partner day
On 6th of June 2018 the partner day of waste management took place at the main square of Leoben. The goal of the event was public education on waste batteries. 180 students from Leoben and its surroundings could inform themselves via various stages on topics such as variety, toxicity, hazard potential, collection and recycling of batteries. At the same time hands on experiments, designed by students of the "Neues Gymnasium Leoben", rounded off the topic. The partner day 2018 was organized by the "Abfallwirtschaftsverband" of Leoben in cooperation with the "Neues Gymnasium Leoben" and the chair of waste processing technology and waste managment. A photo of the event you can find here.

Our landfill mining projekt NEW-MINE
The blog "Uran Mining" deals in its latest  post with our present landfill mining project NEW-MINE (Link). 15 PhD students conduct research in this field in whole Europe on the entire added value chain from exploration via landfill mining and processing to the recycling of the excavated waste.

Field trip – IFAT 2018
The chair of Waste Processing Technology and Waste Management (AVAW) and the chair for Process Technology and Industrial Environmental Protection (VTIU), supported by the association for the Promotion of Interests of Environmental Engineers (VIU), organise an excursion to the World’s Leading Trade Fair for Water, Sewage, Waste and Raw Material Management (IFAT), every two years. This year, we (26 IU students and 1 patient bus driver) visited Munich from May 17 to May 18 to be informed about innovative environmental technologies, to exchange information and ideas with several of the exhibitors (more than 3.000) and to maintain or intensify contacts. Further information to the exhibition can be found under: https://www.ifat.de/index.html. Pictures of our trip you find here.

TV-report Projekt NEW-MINE
Montanuniversität Leoben has been investigating the resource-oriented excavation of landfills (Landfill Mining). Our present EU research project NEW-MINE deals thereby especially with the development of upstream and downstream technologies for landfil exploration and mechanical processing and thermal valorisation of recovered secondary raw materials, respectively. The TV station Euronews reports in its latest  episode about our project and our test station for sensor-based recognition and sorting. Here is the report.

Styrian spring-clean 2018
The Chair of Waste Processing Technology and Waste Management at the Montanuniversität Leoben collected about 100 kilograms of mindlessly thrown away waste participating the 11th Styrian spring-clean 2018. A good part of the old city of Leoben and the slopes of the river Mur got cleansed of littered waste and is now again a nicer place for everyone. A special thanks to all colleagues who made this amazing result possible (group photo)! So, please everyone: STOP LITTERING!
